The Voice

Do you remember when you got in trouble and your dad raised his voice? Remember the fear and anxiety?

Lately, my Daughter has figured out that she can push her step stool up to the kitchen counter and help herslef to all sorts of treats. My dad caught her and told her to put the candy back. She ignored him. He warns her, "Your dad's coming." She calls his bluff. I hear this from the living room and in my best "dad-voice," sternly say, "Hey! What did grandpa ask you to do?!" I didn't have to show up. I didn't even have to get up. She frantically put it back and climbed down from the stepping stool while on the brink of tears.

Psalm 29:
Ascribe to the Lord, O heavenly beings,
    ascribe to the Lord glory and strength.
Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name;
    worship the Lord in the splendor of holiness.
The voice of the Lord is over the waters;
    the God of glory thunders,
    the Lord, over many waters.
The voice of the Lord is powerful;
    the voice of the Lord is full of majesty.
The voice of the Lord breaks the cedars;
    the Lord breaks the cedars of Lebanon.
He makes Lebanon to skip like a calf,
    and Sirion like a young wild ox.
The voice of the Lord flashes forth flames of fire.
The voice of the Lord shakes the wilderness;
    the Lord shakes the wilderness of Kadesh.
The voice of the Lord makes the deer give birth
    and strips the forests bare,
    and in his temple all cry, “Glory!”
10 The Lord sits enthroned over the flood;
    the Lord sits enthroned as king forever.
11 May the Lord give strength to his people!
    May the Lord bless his people with peace!

(Bold mine. Your Bible won't have "voice" in bold, but I am intentionally pointing you to it.)

Look at how much God is able to accomplish with just His voice! This is consistent with the Genesis 1 account:  And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. (vs. 3)

Psalm 29 continues to show God's power over creation with just His voice. It is scary and should cause the reader to FEAR. Vs 3-8 displays strength that could subdue any human or nation.

Verse 9 stands in contrast, because not only does His voice "strips the forests bare," at His command, deer give birth. This is important to note that HIS VOICE BRINGS FORTH LIFE. Hmm, do we see this in the New Testament? I'm glad you asked!

John 11:43,44
"...[Jesus] cried out with a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out.” 44 The man who had died came out..."

A believer ought to fear the voice of God-- it should make him tremble. Yet at the same time, the Psalmist concludes in verse 10-11 that God sits as King, but a good King over His people. We despise dishonest politicians because they abuse their power. God is a King who uses His power, position, and authority for His people. He gives them strength and blesses them with peace.
Later that day, Grandma yelled at my Daughter for something and she ran out of grandma's room crying. In my best "dad-voice," I called her by name and commanded her to come. She comes running and throws herself in my arms sobbing. The same voice from Dad that scared her so much earlier is now the voice that soothes her achy heart. She trusts me. She knows my character. She knows that my arms will bring her close enough to hear my heartbeat. If I, a sinful human dad, am capable of this... how much greater is our perfect Father?

Shh. Turn off your gadgets for a little bit. Listen for that voice. Fear Him and give the glory due His Name. Worship Him because He is a God who strengthens us and gives us peace.
